This episode introduced Stresemann, a famous (and perverted) German conductor. He is going to be teaching at the school for a year, and starts an orchestra made up of people he hand-picked. Also, Chiaki decides to request a transfer into the conducting department. However, having a severe and irrational dislike for Chiaki’s idol, Viera, Stresemann tears up the request in Chiaki’s face after making it clear that whatever he says, goes. Nodame, in an effort to prevent Chiaki from leaving the school, pleas with Stresemann to approve Chiaki’s request. The episode ends on a cliffhanger, with Nodame having to decide whether or not to kiss Stresemann, the condition he gave for allowing Chiaki’s transfer.
I didn’t think this episode was as good as the previous ones; while it did further develop the existing main characters a bit (most notably Chiaki’s desire to transfer and apparently greater feelings for Nodame), it didn’t feel like much actually happened in the episode, and I found only a couple of the attempts at humor funny. That said, I still can’t wait for the next episode ^_^
P.S. If anyone recognizes the song Nodame was playing early on in the episode, please let me know. Thanks.

The piece Nodame was playing in the beginning is the Fantasia impromptu by Chopin. One of his best piece imo and Nodame played it with her typical disregard for tempo and beats :P

Well, that’s actually harder to do than it sounds. At first, I thought she was playing Chopin, and so I started playing a bunch of Chopin pieces I have on CD. The later 1/2 of what she plays is most likely Chopin’s Prelude number 19, but the first half I’m having trouble identifying. What I think is going on is Nodame put together two unrelated Chopin pieces into one sorta free-style session. Of course, I could be mistaken.

or I could be completely wrong. I swear that that second half of that piece sounds very similar to the prelude. Then again, it could be Chopin recycling his own work. Meh.

Ah, thanks a lot. I should probably give that song a shot, as I haven’t played anything of Chopin’s other than Heroic Polonaise.

It’s definitely Fantaisie-Impromptu. She’s just playing it at 1.5x speed than its supposed to be played and she’s sloppy.

Loved this episode. Pervy old men are seen as comedic relief, but this is the first time I’ve seen just plain politics in an anime. Plus, in this two-parter, Nodame is finally rescuing Chiaki, in a way I sure haven’t seen in anime, yet in a way that’s definitely her character. Probably best to see this and the next ep in one sitting.
